Remember what you love,
you with sand in your teeth
and the feral burn of hunger
in your eyes.

God sends his regrets.
He made you grasping and slow,
in a late hour
when the wine washed low.

Remember what you love.

Fall to your knees in the toss
and the swell, quell
the appetite of the cold black sea.
Beg blessings for your home
and the salt-sick trees.

Reach what lies near:
the fat-faced child, the sweet-soft lamb;
tether the tantrum, trickle the blood.

Offer psalms to what is holy,
whisper the name of what you love
as it bobs in the bleak mad sea.

Wow. Just wow. This is absolutely gorgeous. I had to read it a few times before I was satisfied xD
This makes me think of Good Friday, especially the references to a sea. The cold, black, sea could be interpreted as sin... What makes this so amazing though is that it can be interpreted many different ways. Lovely wording here and lovely meaning as well c:

Thank you so much. I understand that poems mean different things to
different readers but you have pretty much hit on what my original intent was
with this poem. I'm really glad you enjoyed it.

Poetry doesn't often catch my eye on dA because it's just...meh. But just from the little thumbnail, I could tell this poem would be an exception, and I was right. I like the mostly monosyllabic words that you used because they were abrupt and shocking. They got my attention and kept it, like being hit with gunshots. It really contributes well to the flow, and there's a music here that I can't quite explain, but enjoy. The thing that I appreciate the most about this poem is that it turns a holiday we typically think of as happy, and it turns it on its head by making it dark and almost ominous. The sea symbolism, perhaps an allusion to baptism, feels like something to be feared, not celebrate. Lovely work.

Congratulations on your well-deserved DD. :)

This is a most generous, thorough and thoughtful response.
You grasped my intent with this poem very well.
I do like language to be liquid almost,  and musical, as you put it,
if I can possibly manage it. Thank you so much.

I can't explain exactly what the poem made me feel, as I only saw small flashes and such, but the wordplay and the chilling ambiguity really make this piece stand out, and it's interesting trying to connect it with the symbolism of today's date.  I really like this poem and congrats on your DD!

I do love to play with language and I'm glad you could pick up on and enjoy that.
Much appreciated and I hope your Easter was a happy one.

This is wonderful in its ambiguity … personally I feel like it could allude to Christ's suffering and journey to Calvary. I think "Remember what you love" could be the refrain of any martyr, anyone who is lost or suffering hoping for redemption. Thank you for writing and sharing this.

Somebody earlier asked me what this poem was supposed to mean
and if I'd seen your response I probably would have directed them to it. :)
I think poems say different things to different people and I love how you
were able to get at the heart of what I was trying to convey.
Thanks so much!

Thank you Shane, the feeling's mutual.
(I think almost the best part of a DD is that first moment
when you log on and see this freaky message spike and you try
to figure out if someone died or what. Someday I want to do a survey
of all the things people thought in that split second.)

What is the meaning behind all this. I don't quite understand?

:iconriparii:

We-e-ll I could explain because there was a specific impetus for it, but to a large degree (I suspect)
poems say different things to different readers (or they may say nothing at all.)

Ok, what I attempted to illustrate is impending loss, less strident than apocalypse
but perhaps more devastating on an emotional level. Something set into motion
by either God or man, depending on your point of view. The loss of hope, the overturn
of the promise of redemption. You may think I have failed utterly. Quite willing to accept that.
